The Fountain

I was excited about this movie from the previews and I didn't even know it was the director of Pi. I really thought that I was going to like it, but the more and more it went on... ...and on.... ...and on, I was just waiting for the end. I get the movie. There are three stories running in line with each other. One is from her book, where he is a Spanish explorer and she is queen. One is modern where he is a surgeon and she is a writer. One is symbolic where she represents his tree of life and also parallels a Mayan cycle of life. The problem is that the stories cross and loose themselves within each other. They get in each other's way rather than help propel each other. This movie is about loosing someone close to you. How that person gives you life, is your life. It is told like a David Lynch film, but unsuccessfully. It just doesn't work. It is boring, depressing, and muddled. There is no redemption for the characters. No real point. It is not about how life goes on. However if there is a guiding light it is the imagery. I just didn't care for the film overall. You are better off watching Pi or Requiem for a Dream. Don't get me wrong. I like when directors take chances. It just didn't work for me in this case. I will be interested with what Darren Aronofsky directs next.

Good:
Visuals.

Bad:
Cluttered.

Comments:
Like Darren Aronofsky's other movies like Pi and Requiem for a Dream. He does better without a budget.

Recommendations:
Try one of his other movies. Let this one go. Warning, the trailer can and probably will suck you in!
